The USS Makin Island is a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship, designed to transport and land elements of a Marine landing force by helicopter, landing craft, or amphibious vehicle anywhere in the world.  She is 847 feet long, with a beam of 110 feet, and displaces over 40,000 tons when full.  She is one of the newest, most sophisticated ships in the Navy and, luckily for us, her homeport is North Island Naval Air Station on Coronado Island. 

Details:

Date and time - Saturday, January 30th, 2010 from 11:00 am to about 2:00 pm

Guests: each CCSD member may bring a single guest, but due to steep stairwells and other elements of the tour, children under 10 years of age may not participate.

Participant Information: For base security purposes, each participating member and/or guest must provide their full name and the license plate and type of their vehicle (if coming onto base) in the RSVP email. 

Carpooling: It has been requested that we carpool onto the base in order to expedite security processing.  Please also indicate in your RSVP email whether you are willing and able to serve as a carpool vehicle.

Lunch:  Our tour will begin with lunch in the ship's Wardroom (officer's dining room); lunch is cash-only and will cost about $10 per person.

Meeting Location: Guests that register for tour will receive email notification of 11:00 am meeting location and additional details.

Cost:  There is no separate cost for the tour, so make sure to thank the servicemen and women we encounter for their great work protecting our country.

Tour spaces available:   Because it is a private tour, space is limited to 20 total participants and numbers will be strictly enforced.  Please RSVP at http://ccsdtourussmakinisland.eventbrite.com.

Reservations will be granted to the first 20 guests to reserve spots.  We will maintain a first come, first-served waiting list for those guests not among the first 20 tickets reserved.
